Windows Vista. While all such issues will be addressed with the first service pack for the operating system later this year, Microsoft is providing valid workarounds that will enable users to mitigate the problems immediately.

1. Windows Mail does not download newsgroup messages in some language versions of Windows Vista – Microsoft revealed that date and time formats in a select language versions of Windows Vista impact the way Windows Mail downloads and manages the metadata associate with newsgroup messages; (934560)

2. You cannot interact with certain tiles in Windows Mobility Center when you establish a Remote Desktop session to a mobile PC that is running Windows Vista – users will now be able to resolve an issue with the accessibility of certain tiles in Windows Mobility Center over a Remote Desktop connection to a Windows Vista mobile PC; (934553)

3. When you use Online Media in the Windows Media Center Extender on an Xbox 360 Video game system, Media Center closes – users experiencing this problem along with errors such as "Connection Terminated - The Xbox 360 has been disconnected because an application has launched UI unexpectedly. Would you like to reconnect?" should apply this hotfix; (934542)

4. You may be unable to type Chinese characters for the user name and for the computer name in the OOBE Wizard; in certain Chinese-language versions of Windows Vista - Chinese some characters cannot be entered into the Out Of Box Experience (OOBE) Wizard; (935951)

5. The Windows Mobility Center program window unexpectedly maintains focus when you perform an action in another program – users that have problems taking Windows Mobility Center program window out of focus on mobile computers now also have a solution; (934554)

6. Error message when you try to upgrade to Windows Vista: "Go to programs and uninstall WindowBlinds"- all users have to do is remove the Stardock folder from their machines; (934558)

7. The Wireless Network tile is not displayed in Windows Mobility Center on a mobile PC that is running Windows Vista – this issue is generated by an unsupported network adapter that fails to integrate correctly with Windows Vista; (934555)

8. The Windows Vista desktop appears black after you enable the "Hide and disable all items on the desktop" policy setting or the "Disable all items" policy setting – for this problem Microsoft is not offering a workaround but an actual hotfix; (934008)

9. The Flight Simulator X game displays flickers and becomes corrupted on a Windows Vista-based computer that is connected to more than one monitor - not the end of the world, and Microsoft is delivering two updates for this; (933590)

10. Error message when you try to automatically install a printer that has an unknown printer driver in Windows Vista: "STATUS_ACCESS_VIOLATION (0xc0000005)" – the source of this issue is a Rundll32.exe process that does not function properly; (932206)

11. A high definition audio device may no longer work after you resume Windows Vista from hibernation or from sleep, and then you restart the computer – a hotfix is available for download; (934237)

12. Changes to a printer's device configuration are not applied until the computer restarts or the Print Spooler service restarts in Windows Vista – in Vista changes to the device configuration of a printer are not applied until the operating system is restarted; (933454)

13. The wrong system locale is installed when you run the Out Of Box Experience (OOBE) Wizard on a Windows Vista-based computer – (934349)

14. An unattended installation of Windows Vista uses the Autounattend.xml file on the Windows Vista installation disc instead of the Autounattend.xml file on a USB flash drive – this happens because there are two Autounattend.xml files (answer files) for the unattended installation of the operating system; (933495)

15. Error message when you start Outlook 2007 in Windows Vista: ".pst file could not be opened" – there are a few reasons for this issue but also a workaround; (934545)

Yodm 3D - 3D Desktop for Windows XP and Vista

To rotate the 3D desktop cube:CTRL+SHIFT+Left/Right = Swith to next or previous desktop. CTRL+SHIFT+Up = Activate Yod’m 3D and show a “far” or “wide-angle” view of the current desktop, and then press Left or Right to select turn the desktop cube. CTRL+SHIFT+Down = Activate and show a “near” or “tele-photo” view of the current desktop, and then press Left or Right to switch rotate the desktop. Hold down CTRL+SHIFT to use the mouse to turn and rotate the cube horizontally. Use the scroll wheel to zoom in or out.

To move a windows to another desktop (total of virtual 4 desktops):

1. Click and hold on the title bar of the window (not maximized if possible).

2. Press and hold on CTRL+SHIFT keys to activate the Yod’m 3D cube.

3. When the cube is activated, move the window to the left or right.4. Release CTRL+SHIFT keys.

To change the wallpaper of a desktop:

The wallpaper of each desktop (total of 4 virtual desktops available) can be changed by using Display Settings of Windows Vista or Windows XP.

To switch to another application immediately:

Click on the Yod’m 3D icon in the taskbar, the list of the windows opened in other desktop appear.

Then click on the application to switch to the desktop instantly.

Microsoft Patches Windows Cursor Flaw

As expected, Microsoft has released security update MS07-017, which patches a critical vulnerability in Windows Animated Cursor Handling. The company says it was working on the fix since December, and has posted it early due to reports of attacks.

The problem is similar to one discovered in early 2005, which did not apparently affect Windows XP Service Pack 2. The new vulnerability came to light in December, but an exploit taking advantage of the flaw surfaced only last week.

McAfee's Avert labs noted that the problem impacted XP SP2 and Windows Vista, as well as Windows 2000 SP4 and Windows Server 2003. Microsoft's Security Response Center jumped into action and confirmed the vulnerability shortly thereafter, promising a swift resolution. A video of the incident shows a Vista system wherein the test file apparently trying to load the custom animated cursor.

When the operating system detects a crash, it first tries to save vital data prior to a restart sequence - one of Vista's newer features. It then informs the user that Windows Explorer has crashed. But in trying to restart Explorer, the restarting crashes itself, sending Vista into a tailspin from which the only escape appears to be the off button. Although MS07-017 has been released separate from its usual "Patch Tuesday" cycle, Microsoft claims the update was already scheduled for April 10, so moving it up one week is not that difficult of a task - a point ostensibly made to emphasize that customers should not expect similar turnaround on security patches in the future.

The Windows AIK is a new set of deployment tools supporting the latest release of Windows. This guide describes the current methods, tools, and requirements for deploying Windows. This documentation update includes revised content that addresses known help issues, workarounds, and other changes.

These files replace the release-to-manufacturing (RTM) .chm files.

To download the Windows AIK documentation update:
1. Start the download by clicking the Download button on this page.
2. Click Save to save the .zip file to your computer.
3. Open the .zip file and drag the .chm and .rtf files to a folder on your computer.
4. Open the .chm file or .rtf file.

To install the Windows AIK documentation update:
1. Back up your existing Windows AIK RTM documentation files. For example, move the files out of the installed documentation directory (by default, C:\Program Files\Windows AIK\docs\CHMs.)

Thanks to Steve Jobs for this post in this blog. You have successfully activate Windows Vista instantly in OEM style by using hardware-level BIOS ACPI-SLIC mod, or one of the two software based OEM BIOS emulator such as softmod SLIC BIOS bootloader and Paradox OEM BIOS Emulation Toolkit.

However, if you’re not install Windows Vista with OEM DVD media image, your installed version of Windows Vista edition is just of plain flavor. If you fancy to have some OEM logo identification and OEM information somewhere in Windows Vista use below patcher, the auto patcher does automatically add and install Lenovo, HP or Dell and many more OEM logo and information to Windows Vista.

A user at a Chinese Windows Vista forum has created automated installer that add the OEM logo and info to Windows Vista. Once executed, the setup will copy the required files to \Windows\System32\OOBE folder or its sub-directory, depending on which OEM brand you pick. It will also automatically merge the registry entries and values for OEM logo and info to at least the following two registry keys: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\OEMInformation and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winsat\WindowsExperienceIndexOemInfo To use the automated patcher and installer for OEM logo, simply double click on the downloaded executable, and then click on the Install button (you will see garbage text, but just click on the left button of the bottom two to start the installation. If your Windows Vista installation is not on C:\ drive, select from the drop down list under the label D. After the OEM logo and information has been applied, you will see Welcome Center and System of Control Panel as in screenshots below. The information has added optional items related to OEM manufacturer include the manufacturer and model, a small logo picture, and a button leading to a separate page of support information.

How to install the Oem Certifications?You need to check if the BIOS contains SLIC (Software Licensing Description Table) and RSDT tables by using Everest which you will find in this kit. Run the Everest and look for an entry called ‘’SLIC’’and ‘’RSDT’’ in Motherboard>ACPI. (see screen shot) If your BIOS if not currently supported, try to upgrade and flash the BIOS to latest version from motherboard manufacturer, should this not work, use the Bios Emulator (VistaActivator 2.1.2) from this Kit. Vista OEM certificates for the folowing brands are included in this Kit: Acer, Asus, Dell, Emachine, Gateway, HP, Lenovo, NEC and Sony Once you confirm that your motherboard and BIOS has SLIC table in ACPI and you have the OEM certification for your brand, you can proceed with one of the two following methods: Method 1: OEM activation for during Vista installation:

Install any of the following Windows Vista edition:Home Basic, Home Premium, Business, Ultimate
During installation, enter the corresponding edition of OEM product key listed in this file (OemKeys.txt) in the folder Oem Keys of this Kit.
After installing Windows Vista, open an elevated command prompt with administrator rights and execute the following command to import the correct OEM cert: slmgr.vbs -ilc oemcert.xrm-ms ‘’Wait until windows pops up with a conformation-message.’’ For example, to import and install a Dell OEM cert for a Dell computer, execute (assuming the OEM cert is located at C:\ drive:slmgr.vbs -ilc c:\dell.xrm-ms Windows Vista should be automatically and permanently activated. Method 2: OEM activation Vista already installed:
Open an elevated command prompt with administrator rights and execute the following command to import the correct OEM cert: slmgr.vbs -ilc oemcert.xrm-ms ‘’Wait until windows pops up with a conformation-message. ‘’ For example, to import and install a Dell OEM cert for a Dell computer, execute (assuming the OEM cert is located at C:\ drive:slmgr.vbs -ilc c:\dell.xrm-ms 2.Now type "C:\windows\system32\slmgr -ipk ". Wait until windows pops up with a conformation-message
Now type "C:\windows\system32\slmgr -ato ‘’Wait until windows pops up with a conformation-message.’’ This will activate OEM version of Windows Vista (or Windows Vista as OEM edition) once the digital certificate is loaded. Your are activated! How to install Oem Logos?Double click on the exe file of the brand you want to install, and confirm with yes at the next pop up window. You are done! How to install the bios emulator (only for those bios without the slic table support!!!)1. Install Windows Vista WITHOUT a key (if already installed nevermind)2. unpack the complete folder to a folder, say C:\vistaloader_2.1.23. go to start > all programs > accessoires and rightclick "Command Prompt" > choose "run as administrator" type "C:\vistaloader_2.1.2 \install.cmd".
Now REBOOT!

Microsoft’s Windows ‘Fiji’ on track to debut before Windows Seven

With Microsoft constantly switching up codenames, it's tough to keep track of what's on and what's off. But "Fiji" is on.

As I reported a while back, "Vienna," formerly known as "Blackcomb" is officially known inside Redmond's hallowed halls as Windows 7 (or more accurately, "Windows Seven," kind of like "Oceans Eleven," according to one of my fussy sources). Last year, I reported there was an interim Windows release on the books, code-named Fiji, that was slated to ship some time between Vista and Vienna. Others subsequently reported that Fiji was Vista Service Pack (SP)

Microsoft wouldn't comment either way. Well, it turns out that Fiji is, indeed, an interim Windows release and it is not Vista SP1. Fiji is the codename for the next version of Windows Media Center, according to various sources and blog hints. And Microsoft's plan of record is to release this next Windows Media Center build "out of band," meaning in between core Windows releases.

So the Windows Media Center roadmap looks like this (courtesy of Charlie Owen, a product manager on the Media Center team):

All prior releases were 'Windows Out Of Band Release' projects — meaning they weren't necessarily tied to a particular shipping date of Windows (or a Windows service pack). Our next version is yet another out of band release and (generally speaking) the team is pretty happy about that because it allows us to get back on our (approximate) yearly schedule of delivering goodness to customers (it was a major feat of engineering load balancing for us to be simultaneously working on 'Emerald' and 'Diamond' at the same time — a story for some other time). For the obvious follow up: Sorry, no dates or specific milestones to share, and past performance is not indicative of future release dates. Suffice it to say we are hard at work defining and coding the next version."
