As we wrote Longhorn Beta is coming out. Windows Server Code Name Longhorn is schedueled for release to beta testers sometime later today, with some of the most important changes coming to Longhorn Server Core. PowerShell is also included in the 3rd beta release of Longhorn Server, as well as the Windows Firewall being enabled by default. More to come (or go) as we get it. This is still rather raw, so this whole post could literally vanish if Beta 3 is delayed for some reason.

Microsoft Releases Five New Vista Patches
Last week, Microsoft released some "important" updates for Windows Vista that haven't made their way to Windows Update yet.
Here's the shakedown:

- This update configures the Windows Customer Experience Improvement Program to improve the quality of software information sent to Microsoft.
- Update for Windows Vista (KB932649)
- Install this update to resolve an issue where poor video quality may be experienced when configuring video to interlaced mode on a system running Windows Vista.
- Update for Windows Vista (KB931671)
- Install this update to resolve an issue where an error message is received when placing a Windows Vista system into a sleep state while a PPP connection is active.
- Update for Windows Vista (KB933824)
- Install this update to resolve an issue where an Apple iPod may be corrupted by using the Safely Remove Hardware feature on a system running Windows Vista.

Yodm 3D - 3D Desktop for Windows XP and Vista
To rotate the 3D desktop cube:CTRL+SHIFT+Left/Right = Swith to next or previous desktop. CTRL+SHIFT+Up = Activate Yod’m 3D and show a “far” or “wide-angle” view of the current desktop, and then press Left or Right to select turn the desktop cube. CTRL+SHIFT+Down = Activate and show a “near” or “tele-photo” view of the current desktop, and then press Left or Right to switch rotate the desktop. Hold down CTRL+SHIFT to use the mouse to turn and rotate the cube horizontally. Use the scroll wheel to zoom in or out.
To move a windows to another desktop (total of virtual 4 desktops):
1. Click and hold on the title bar of the window (not maximized if possible).
2. Press and hold on CTRL+SHIFT keys to activate the Yod’m 3D cube.
3. When the cube is activated, move the window to the left or right.4. Release CTRL+SHIFT keys.
To change the wallpaper of a desktop:
The wallpaper of each desktop (total of 4 virtual desktops available) can be changed by using Display Settings of Windows Vista or Windows XP.
To switch to another application immediately:
Click on the Yod’m 3D icon in the taskbar, the list of the windows opened in other desktop appear.
Then click on the application to switch to the desktop instantly.

To test if your computer can run the Vista version of Movie Maker:
1. From the Start menu, click All Programs.
2. Click Windows Movie Maker. If Movie Maker launches, you should not download version 2.6. If you get an error message that says, "Windows Movie Maker cannot start because your video card does not support the required level of hardware acceleration or hardware acceleration is not available", download and install Movie Maker 2.6.

Microsoft Patches Windows Cursor Flaw
As expected, Microsoft has released security update MS07-017, which patches a critical vulnerability in Windows Animated Cursor Handling. The company says it was working on the fix since December, and has posted it early due to reports of attacks.
The problem is similar to one discovered in early 2005, which did not apparently affect Windows XP Service Pack 2. The new vulnerability came to light in December, but an exploit taking advantage of the flaw surfaced only last week.

McAfee's Avert labs noted that the problem impacted XP SP2 and Windows Vista, as well as Windows 2000 SP4 and Windows Server 2003. Microsoft's Security Response Center jumped into action and confirmed the vulnerability shortly thereafter, promising a swift resolution. A video of the incident shows a Vista system wherein the test file apparently trying to load the custom animated cursor.
When the operating system detects a crash, it first tries to save vital data prior to a restart sequence - one of Vista's newer features. It then informs the user that Windows Explorer has crashed. But in trying to restart Explorer, the restarting crashes itself, sending Vista into a tailspin from which the only escape appears to be the off button. Although MS07-017 has been released separate from its usual "Patch Tuesday" cycle, Microsoft claims the update was already scheduled for April 10, so moving it up one week is not that difficult of a task - a point ostensibly made to emphasize that customers should not expect similar turnaround on security patches in the future.

Vista Automated Installation Kit - WAIK User's Guide
The Windows Automated Installation Kit (Windows AIK) is designed to help Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), system builders, and corporate IT professionals deploy Windows onto new hardware.
The Windows AIK is a new set of deployment tools supporting the latest release of Windows. This guide describes the current methods, tools, and requirements for deploying Windows. This documentation update includes revised content that addresses known help issues, workarounds, and other changes.
These files replace the release-to-manufacturing (RTM) .chm files.
To download the Windows AIK documentation update:
1. Start the download by clicking the Download button on this page.
2. Click Save to save the .zip file to your computer.
3. Open the .zip file and drag the .chm and .rtf files to a folder on your computer.
4. Open the .chm file or .rtf file.
To install the Windows AIK documentation update:
1. Back up your existing Windows AIK RTM documentation files. For example, move the files out of the installed documentation directory (by default, C:\Program Files\Windows AIK\docs\CHMs.)
2. Copy the .chm documentation files included in this release to the installation directory of the Windows AIK RTM documentation versions. For example, copy waik.chm, unattend.chm, winpe.chm, and Helpmap.dat to the C:\Program Files\Windows AIK\docs\CHMs directory.
If you experience problems opening the .chm file, use the following workaround.
1. Right-click the .chm file, and then click Properties.
